I've had kids ask me from time to time why today is called GOOD Friday instead of BAD Friday. Afterall, didn't something bad happen the Friday before Easter? Difficult to help a child understand.
Something wonderful and amazing happened all those years ago on the Friday before Resurrection Day................. a man, perfect and whole, who had walked and preached to reach thousands of people, allowed himself to be led to Calvary. Allowed himself to be beaten, pierced, spat upon, and finally murdered in a show of such love and grace that none can understand. Imagine, if you will, yourself stepping in front of a gunman to save your child or sacrificing your life for that of your own flesh and blood. That's what HE did for us.
Why? Why would HE do that? What did HE owe me? HE did nothing to deserve this, and yet, like a parent (like you and me), he sacrificed HIMSELF in order to save HIS children from death.
That's why today is called GOOD Friday. The GOOD ONE died so that we might live. How much love must have been pouring through HIS veins on that fateful day (remember what it felt like right after the pain of childbirth and you first looked into the eyes of your child?). HE felt so much more!
Good Friday is really about Resurrection Day....three days later. HE defeated death and rose again so that we might worship HIM, not just on Easter, but every day of our lives.
Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound
that saved a wretch like me
I once was lost, but now am found
was blind, but now I see!
